As of December 20, 2022, in the Okhotsk region of Hokkaido, the three fishing cooperatives Tokoro, Saroma and Yubetsu surrounding Lake Saroma have ended the scallop fishing and season.

It is predicted that the scallop catch will be 325,100 tons, which is 2% lower than last year's highest historical record, but it has remained above 300,000 tons for four consecutive years.

Operations were difficult due to the stormy weather in December, said a head of a fishing cooperative. In the end, production at Tokoro was up 2% on the previous year to about 44,000 tons, Saroma reached 10,000 tons, the same level as before, and Yubetsu fell 5%, under 37,000 tons.

During this season, prices for shell-on scallops stayed at high level due to higher prices for frozen scallop meat, strong overseas demand, and a weakness of yen. The average price of scallops in each region is around 200 yen (about $1.50) per kilogram, and many say the value of processed scallops is at an all-time high, according to a head of a fishing cooperative.
