The recommendation identifies China's distant-water fishing fleet as a primary target for scrutiny, while the Japanese, South Korean and Taiwanese fleets have also been placed on the watch list. Four core measures are proposed: enhanced inspections, strengthened flag state responsibilities, and the promotion of a regional fisheries management organisation (RFMO) in the Southwest Atlantic, among others. A subsequent critical analysis has challenged the recommendation, pointing out that Spanish trawlers operate in the same unregulated waters as the Asian fleets and have their own record of regulatory violations and penalties, yet the recommendation does not apply the same level of risk warning to the European fleet, raising questions about double standards in EU rules.

Peru has once again raised its 2026 fishing quota for gigas squid, fueling growing market expectations of increased future supply. Driven by the release of the additional quota, wholesale prices of Peruvian gigas squid on China’s market continued to fall in Week 28 (July 6 – July 12). In contrast, Illex squid from Argentina maintained steady prices amid tight supply, creating a stark divergence between the two major South American squid varieties.

The 2026 Peruvian squid fishing season is showing strong signs of a "fast-paced" trajectory. According to the latest official report from Peru, during the fishing period from January 1 to April 30, 2026, cumulative squid landings had reached 108,502.8 tons as of February 24, accounting for 60.55% of the total quota of 179,188 tons. Since late January, production has shown a continuous upward trend, with weekly increments accelerating noticeably in mid-to-late February, and the overall pace significantly exceeding early expectations.

According to Official Technical Report No. 20/2025 issued by Argentina's National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) on May 9, as of May 8 (Week 19), the cumulative nationwide squid landings in Argentina had reached 147,929 tons, while the total volume actually recorded at ports has surpassed the milestone of 150,000 tons. This figure not only matches recent high levels but also suggests the potential to set the strongest fishing record of the past decade.
